Latvia added to a year of notable sporting success December 4 with weightlifter Artūrs Plēsnieks claiming a silver medal in the world weightlifting championships being held in the United States of America. In the 105 kilo class Ventspils-born Plēsnieks finished just behind Iran's weightlifter Ali Hashimi, who became the world champion with a lift of 404 kilograms (183 + 221), with Plēsnieks just two kilos behind, eng.lsm.lv reports.
On November 30, our weightlifter Rebeka Koha won bronze there, becoming the first female weightlifter from Latvia to win a medal at the world championships. In the 58 kg category, Koha lifted a combined total of 222 kilograms - 101 kilograms in the snatch and 121 kilograms in the clean and jerk.
